The Internet of Things, or IoT, is a system of interrelated computing devices that can collect and transfer data over a wireless network without human input. IoT stands for Internet of Things.

 It refers to the interconnectedness of physical devices, such as appliances and vehicles, that are embedded with software, sensors, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data.  

The main concept of a network of smart devices was discussed as early as 1982, with a modified Coca-Cola vending machine at Carnegie Mellon University becoming the first ARPANET-connected appliance, able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold or not.

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity, which enables these objects to connect and exchange data. IoT allows devices to be controlled or monitored remotely across the existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems. This results in improved efficiency, accuracy, and economic benefit. The IoT ecosystem consists of web-enabled smart devices that use embedded processors, sensors, and communication hardware to collect, send, and act on data they acquire from their environments. The connectivity and integration of these devices allow them to be remotely monitored and controlled, and introduce a wide range of applications in homes, businesses, and cities.
