We recapitulated the simplest structural and functional unit of the human airway by engineering anisotropic human bronchial smooth muscle (BSM) lamellae and mimicked the local immune response in the asthmatic airway by exposing the engineered tissue to interleukin-13 (IL-13), a cytokine prominently found in the airway of asthmatic patients.
