western sahara is a disputed territory in north-western africa. it became a colony of spain, known as the spanish sahara, in 1886. morocco and mauritania claimed the area in the late 1950s. the polisario front was founded in 1973 to fight for independence for western sahara. in the green march of 1975, 300,000 moroccans entered and occupied the northern area of western sahara. spain agreed to divide the territory between morocco and mauritania, and withdrew its forces in 1976. polisario declared the saharan arab democratic republic (sadr) and war between morocco, mauritania, and polisario started. mauritania withdrew its claim to western sahara in 1979. polisario became a member of the organization of african unity in 1984, causing morocco to withdraw from the oau in 1985. polisario has been recognized by over 70 countries worldwide. war between polisario and morocco continued through the 1980s. the united nations has attempted to organise a referendum to settle the sovereignty issue. fishing and phosphate mining are important industries. the principal town is al-ayoun.
