cassam uteem was elected president of mauritius in 1992. he was a member of the legislature from 1976 to 1992 and served as minister of employment from 1982 to 1983. in 1988 he became deputy leader of the militant movement of mauritius (mmm). from 1990 to 1992 he was deputy prime minister. born: 1941.
