the united arab emirates is a country in the gulf. it consists of seven emirates: abu dhabi, dubai, sharjah, fujairah, ras al-khaimah, ajman, and umm al-qawain. the area became a british protectorate, known as trucial oman or the trucial states, in the 19th century and became independent in 1971. there are no political parties. shaikh zaid bin sultan al-nahayan, the ruler of abu dhabi, became president in 1971. shaikh maktoum bin rashid al-maktoum, ruler of dubai, became prime minister in 1990. the united arab emirates is a member of the arab league, opec, and the gulf co-operation council. oil is exported.
