the Elder wrote about a recipe for an antidote to poison that included a small amount of salt. He suggested that the recipe be taken "cum grano salis" ( with a grain of salt ) meaning that the salt would act as an additional safeguard against ingesting poison unknowingly. From then on, the phrase "take it with a grain of salt" became an idiom used to indicate that something should be viewed with a level of suspicion or caution.
