prince norodom sihanouk became king of cambodia for the third time in 1993. he is the son of king norodom suramarit and first became the ruler of independent cambodia in 1953. he was deposed in 1970 and established the royal government of national union of cambodia (grunc) in exile. he was restored as head of state when the khmer rouge forces overthrew the khmer republic in 1975 and resigned in 1976. from 1982 to 1988 and from 1989 to 1991, he was the head of state in exile of the national government of kampuchea. in 1991 he returned to cambodia at the head of a council of national unity. following elections in 1993 and the adoption of a new constitution he once again became king. born: 1922.
