flight-lieutenant jerry rawlings became chairman of the provisional national defence council (pndc) of ghana in a coup in 1981. he previously led a coup in 1979 and was head of state for four months. in 1992 he retired from the armed forces and formed the national democratic congress (ndc) in order to contest multi-party, presidential elections, which he won. born: 1947.
