A very unusual radio signal has recently been detected in our galaxy, the Milky Way, which astronomers still cannot fully explain. In fact, a source emits a large amount of energy intermittently every 18 minutes or so, 4 thousand light years away. The discovery was reported in an article in Nature, and is attracting a lot of attention among researchers and enthusiasts. In particular, Dr. Tyrone O'Doherty and Dr. Natasha Hurley - Walker, of Curtin University, Australia, are part of the research team that identified the phenomenon and hypothesizes that it could be produced by a celestial body such as a neutron star that "spins" very quickly ( usually known as a pulsar ) , or the remains of some white dwarfs, with an extremely powerful magnetic field. The longest pulsar signal ever recorded repeats on a timescale of 118 seconds, and substantially longer periods were thought to be impossible, at least until now. J162759. 5 - 523504. 3 ( GLEAM - X ) has a cycle of 1, 091 seconds ( about 18 minutes ) with signals lasting 30 - 60 seconds. It also has a brightness similar to the brightest known pulsar, in the Crab Nebula. “This object was appearing and disappearing within a few hours during our observations, ” Hurley - Walker said in a statement. “It was completely unexpected. It was a little scary for an astronomer, because there’s nothing known in the sky that does this. And it’s really, really close to us — about 4, 000 light - years away. ” It is in our “galactic backyard”.
