panopticon

- پانوپتیکون یک طرح معماری برای زندان بود: ساختمانی دایره ای با یک برج مرکزی. سلول های زندانیان در اطراف این دایره قرار می گرفتند و از برج مرکزی قابل مشاهده بودند. زندانیان نمی توانستند ببینند که آیا در هر لحظه تحت نظر هستند یا نه. این عدم قطعیت باعث می شد که زندانیان همیشه رفتار خود را کنترل کنند، گویی که همیشه تحت نظارت اند.
میشل فوکو، فیلسوف فرانسوی، در کتاب نظارت و تنبیه از پانوپتیکون به عنوان نماد قدرت مدرن یاد می کند.
