A minimal pair ( or minimal set when there are more than two words ) is a pair of words that differ from each other in meaning but have the same sequence of sounds, except for one specific sound. This single differing sound is called a phoneme, and it’s always in the same position within the words.

Why it’s important:
Linguists use minimal pairs to determine if two sounds are distinct phonemes in a language or if they are just variations ( allophones ) of the same phoneme. If changing one sound changes the meaning of the word, then that sound is a phoneme.
Example:
Let’s look at the English word “pat”.
If we change the initial sound /p/ to /b/, we get “bat”. “Pat” and “bat” have different meanings, and they only differ by the initial consonant sound. So, /p/ and /b/ are distinct phonemes in English.
If we change the vowel sound // to /ɪ/, we get “pit”. “Pat” and “pit” have different meanings and differ only in the vowel. So, // and /ɪ/ are distinct phonemes.
If we change the final sound /t/ to /k/, we get “pack”. “Pat” and “pack” have different meanings and differ only in the final consonant sound. So, /t/ and /k/ are distinct phonemes.
In this case, {“pat”, “bat”, “pit”, “pack”} can be considered a minimal set because each word can be differentiated from the others by changing just one phoneme in the same position.
