nelson mandela was elected president of south africa in the country's first free multi-racial elections in 1994. he became national organizer for the african national congress (anc) in the 1950s, and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964. he was released from prison in 1990. he was deputy president of the anc from 1990 to 1991, and has been president since 1991. in 1993 he shared the nobel peace prize with the then president of south africa, f w de klerk. born: 1918.
