dr mahathir bin mohamad became prime minister of malaysia and president of the new united malays national organization (umno baru) in 1981. he was a member of the house of representatives from 1964 to 1969, and was re-elected in 1974. he served as minister of education from 1974 to 1977, and for trade and industry from 1977 to 1981. he was deputy prime minister from 1976 to 1981. born: 1925.
