understood easily in terms of already familiar *CONVENTIONS and
expectations, and is thus reassuringly 'closed'. By contrast, the texte
*SCRIPTIBLE ( 'writerly' text, usually * MODERNIST ) challenges the reader to
produce its meanings from an 'open' play of possibilities. See also
