the republic of lebanon is a country in west asia, on the mediterranean. when it became independent from france in 1941, the national covenant established that the government would reflect the religious composition of the country: the president would be a maronite christian, the prime minister a sunni muslim, the speaker of the national assembly a shia muslim, and the chief of staff of the armed forces a druze. but since independence, the proportion of muslims has drastically increased, largely because of the influx of palestinian refugees. increasing tensions between muslims and christians resulted in civil war, which lasted from 1975 to 1990. the war caused a complete breakdown of civil order. it was ended by syrian military intervention. israel occupied part of southern lebanon and has periodically struck deeper into the country against guerrilla forces who themselves attack israel. elias hrawi, a maronite, became president in 1989. rafiq al-hariri, a sunni, became prime minister in 1992 and has embarked on an ambitious reconstruction programme. in the early 1990s fighting continued in southern lebanon, particularly in the bekaa valley, between hezbollah and the south lebanon army (sla). lebanon was once an important commercial and industrial nation, but the civil war largely destroyed its economy. it produces agricultural products, chemicals, and textiles. opium and cannabis are illegally exported. large foreign debts and high inflation are major economic problems. lebanon is a member of the arab league.
