michal kovc was elected the first president of slovakia by the legislature in 1993. he was formerly deputy chairman of the movement for a democratic slovakia (hzds), but resigned from party politics when he became president. he was slovak minister of finance, prices and wages from 1989 to 1992, and was chairman of czechoslovakia's federal assembly when the country divided in 1993. born: 1930.
