dr helmut kohl became chancellor of west germany in 1982 and of re-united germany in 1990. he was minister-president of the rhineland-palatinate from 1969 to 1976. he was deputy chairman of the christian democratic union (cdu) from 1969 to 1973, and became chairman in 1973. born: 1930.
