paul keating became prime minister of australia in 1991 after the resignation of bob hawke. he was first elected to the house of representatives in 1969. he was minister for northern australia in 1975, and treasurer from 1983 to 1991. he also served as deputy prime minister from 1990 to 1991. he is a member of the australian labor party. born: 1944.
