As someone from Hawaii I appreciate you taking an interest in Hawaiian culture. Makoa is a great name but if you don't live in Hawaii it will constantly be misunderstood and butchered. I have a Hawaiian name and when I am on the mainland people look annoyed with me regarding my name. I think if you don't have any connection to Hawaii, like if you don't live there, then this choice is a little odd. Some kanaka don't like when people outside of Hawaii use their names because it can feel disrespectful. It's also a touchy subject because of the colonialist ban of the Hawaiian language and Hawaiian names for about a century. Naming ceremonies are a big deal surrounding kanaka and a lot of care is put into the name that is bestowed. That is a long winded way to say I like the name but if you don't have connection to Hawaii or its people it's probably not a good idea
