dr cheddi jagan became president of guyana in 1992. he founded the people's progressive party (ppp) in 1949. he was leader of the house of assembly and minister of agriculture in 1953, minister of trade and industry from 1957 to 1961, and the first premier of british guiana (now guyana) from 1961 to 1964. he was leader of the opposition from 1964 to 1973, and from 1976 to 1992. born: 1918.
