ion iliescu became president of romania in 1990. he served on the central committee of the romanian communist party from 1968 to 1984. he was chairman of the national salvation front (nsf) from 1989 to 1990. he was re-elected in 1992 as the candidate of the democratic national salvation front (dnsf), which in 1993 was re-named the social democracy party of romania. born: 1930.
