v?clav havel became president of czechoslovakia in 1989. he is a playwright and former spokesman for charter 77, a human rights group. he was a founder of civic forum in 1989. in 1992 he resigned as president of czechoslovakia because of the impending division of the country. in 1993 he was elected the first president of the czech republic by the legislature. born: 1936.
