to say someone “went bust” is often used for poker games or other casual situations. It is more often used in informal conversations or for jokes. To say someone “went bankrupt” is typically more serious and used when someone has quite literally filed for bankruptcy.

However, they can be used interchangeably in informal settings as they do mean the same thing. Just remember that for serious conversations it would be best to use bankrupt not bust.
