the republic of guinea-bissau is a country in western africa. it was a portuguese colony, known as portuguese guinea, from the 15th century until it became independent in 1974. brigadier-general joao bernardo vieira became president in a coup in 1980. he is a member of the african party for the independence of guinea and cape verde (paigc). in 1991 the post of prime minister was re-established and given to carlos correia of the paigc. guinea-bissau is a member of the organization of african unity. it exports cashews, fish, and peanuts. large foreign debts and high inflation are serious economic problems.
