He says his family from nearby area told him that many of these people were indeed just fishermen and that they were killed because they refused to pay extortion money. The investigations is still ongoing though, but according to him they will be released soon after being caught. EDIT: For anybody who thought this was interesting, as of 4/18/23, my friend tells me the mastermind of this attack was apprehended by the police and military of Ecuador and was released less than 24 hours after, though.
