joaquim alberto chissano became president of mozambique in 1986, when samora machel was killed in a plane crash. he was prime minister from 1974 to 1975, and minister of foreign affairs from 1975 to 1986. he is a member of the front for the liberation of mozambique (frelimo). born: 1939.
