کارفنتانیل یک اوپیوئید مصنوعی بسیار قوی است که تقریباً ۱۰۰ برابر قوی تر از فنتانیل و ۱۰, ۰۰۰ برابر قوی تر از مورفین است. این ماده ابتدا برای استفاده در دامپزشکی به منظور بی هوشی حیوانات بزرگ مانند فیل ها و کرگدن ها توسعه داده شد.
