the republic of cameroon is a country in western africa. it was a german colony from 1884 until 1916, when it was divided into french and british cameroon. french cameroon became independent in 1960. in 1961 part of british cameroon merged with nigeria and the rest became part of the republic of cameroon. a one-party state was established in 1966, with the cameroon national unity (unc) as the ruling party. paul biya became president in 1982 and changed the name of the unc to the cameroon people's democratic movement (rdpc). political parties were legalized in 1990. in 1992 simon achidi achu (rdpc) became prime minister. cameroon exports oil and gas, coffee, and cocoa. large foreign debts are a serious economic problem. it is a member of the organization of african unity.
