compounding

Compounding is a morphological process where two or more words are joined together to create a new word with a new meaning. These new words are called compound words.

Closed compounds: The words are written together as a single word ( e. g. , sunflower, keyboard ) .
Open compounds: The words are written with a space between them but function as a single unit ( e. g. , ice cream, high school ) .
Hyphenated compounds: The words are joined by a hyphen ( e. g. , mother - in - law, well - being ) .
The key characteristic of compounding is that it takes existing words and combines them to form a distinct lexical item.
Examples of Compounding
Closed Compounds:
sun flower = sunflower
key board = keyboard
high way = highway
water fall = waterfall
Open Compounds:
ice cream = ice cream
bus stop = bus stop
post office = post office
Hyphenated Compounds:
mother in law = mother - in - law
state of the art = state - of - the - art
well being = well - being
