the republic of belarus , also known as byelorussia, is a country in eastern europe, west of russia. it became independent of the ussr in 1991. alexandr lukashenko was elected president in 1994. in 1991 it joined the commonwealth of independent states. byelorussia produces machinery, oil, livestock and other agricultural products. inflation is a serious economic problem.
