isias aferwerke became the first president of eritrea when it became independent in 1993. he joined the eritrean liberation front in 1966 and became its general commander in 1969. he is the leader of the eritrean people's liberation front (eplf), which in 1994 was re-named the people's front for democracy and justice (pfdj). born: 1945.
